Review – Stan & Ollie

Stan & Ollie, directed by Jon S. Baird, is a pleasantly endearing film. It makes you smile, it draws you into a bond and a friendship that is sweet and funny. It all makes for an experience I sat through and… happily enjoyed. But… with Stan & Ollie, I always got the sense that it was struggling to find a driving force that was overly compelling. While I liked my time with the film, it was never one that fully grasped my attention; I drifted from it a few times. My time spent with Stan & Ollie was mixed, and much like it, my path through this review will also be mixed. Review – Okja

Okja, written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, is a film that is continually building and ends up offering so much, in terms of the emotions it elicits and the ideas that it causes you to think about. This is no conventional film and if you’ve seen any of Bong Joon-ho’s previous films that shouldn’t come as a surprise to you. Much like his others film, this one had me fully invested and completely overwhelmed by all that it presented/tackled, and by the time the credits rolled, I was amazed by the journey that it had taken me on. But let’s dispense with all the gushing comments and the intro itself, and get onto the review and what it is that makes Okja such an interesting film to experience. Read more

Review – T2 Trainspotting

T2 Trainspotting, directed by Danny Boyle, does the seemingly impossible, it returns to a well-known and beloved film with a sequel, and somehow is able to both be its own film, while still paying respecting the original. Now, the film isn’t perfect – one or two flaws do standout – but the film is able to add to the characters in a way that feels meaningful, and doesn’t ever feel like it is tarnishing the legacy of a film phenomenon; like the original Trainspotting was.
