Review – Destroyer

Destroyer, directed by Karyn Kusama, isn’t able to salvage what it a dower, cliché revenge drama, despite having two scenes near the very end of the film that do a lot of work to try and evolve the film into something more than what it primarily is. To be honest, my enthusiasm for this review is low, as when it comes to Destroyer, there’s very little to talk about that doesn’t feel like me rehashing things I’ve said about plenty of other films that are exactly like this one. Anyway, let’s drop ourselves down into the review and see what to make of Destroyer. Read more

Review – Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers Infinity War

Warning! This review contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War!

Avengers: Infinity War, directed by Joe & Anthony Russo, is absolutely a success in what Marvel set out to do 10 years ago. Now, a film of this magnitude; with the number of characters it was juggling, and the scope of the threat it is dealing with; means it of course falters in a few places – there are elements to this film that absolutely didn’t work for me. But in the context of the larger film; what it had to juggle; what it needed to accomplish; and the massive audience that it has to serve – especially after 10 years’ worth of well-loved films leading up to it. I think Marvel and the Russo brothers have accomplished what could have easily been a massive bin fire full of disappointment and broken dreams. Having said that though, there is one glaring issue to this film that could easily bring all those positive comments / feelings crumbling down. So, now I have to try to review this film in a coherent way; touching upon all the necessary little moments that need to be talked about. Wish me luck.

Review – I, Tonya

I, Tonya, directed by Craig Gillespie, offers a brutal window into the life of Tonya Harding and will undoubtedly shock you. But it’s also a film that feels very rough around the edges. Things feel slapped together in a haphazard, sloppy way, and there is a lack of consistency to much of the presentation. In that mess though, are some truly outstanding performances. Performances that wowed me and are certainly career bests for a fair few of the actors. So, does the messy delivery of the film result in an experience that I would not recommend having, or is there still enough incredible talent on show that you should make the effort to see, I, Tonya? Well, let’s explore those questions and more in my review, shall we? Read more

Review – Logan Lucky

Logan Lucky, directed by Steven Soderbergh, is a film that is full of so much character. Not only do you have the eclectic selections of characters to enjoy, but you also have the all-American setting; filled with NASCAR, a lively culture that loves and respects its history and an overall charm and wholesomeness that just exists throughout the film. You take all of that and then inject it with the unique essence that makes up Virginia and the surrounding areas, and you get something that really stands-out and makes its presence known. And it is also a film that constructs and delivers a heist plot that keeps all the fun moving with purpose. This is a film that is brimming with wonderful amounts of charm and fun, and it never lets up. But can the film really be all enjoyment and no underlying problems? Well, let’s find out in my review. Review – Captain America: Civil War

Captain America Civil War

Captain America: Civil War, directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, is another large action fest, filled with characters upon characters, and a globe-trotting story. Though it isn’t billed as, this does feel like another large Avengers type movie. The difference with this one is that it actually doesn’t feel bloated and overly managed (there weren’t too many cooks in that kitchen). Coherent storytelling and an ensemble cast of varied and interesting characters are what make this film the spectacle it is – and all out action of course – but does Captain America: Civil War fall prey to the same problems that plague so many of these Marvel Superhero extravaganza’s? Let’s get this review going and find out. Read more
